Here are eight preschool crafts birds turn up in, each with a picture, supplies, and steps, from a handprint duck to a paper plate owl and a bird nest with eggs over the rim. A three-year-old paints the plate, presses a yellow hand, and glues on the eyes. A five-year-old folds the tube ears, cuts the beaks, and counts the eggs. Paint your child's palm and fingers yellow. 2. Press the hand sideways on the blue paper, fingers as tail feathers and thumb pointing up. 3. Let it dry. You cut a yellow circle, an orange beak and 2 orange feet. 4. Glue the circle at the top of the palm as the head. Add the beak and the googly eye. 5. Glue the feather across the palm as a wing and the 2 feet under the palm. Paint the other hand and press it with the palms overlapping in the middle and the fingers spreading out as wings. Let it dry. 3. Glue the 2 eyes side by side on the overlapped palms. 4. Your child paints the roll brown. Let it dry. 2. You push the top edge down in the middle from front and back, so the two sides stick up as ears. 3. Glue on the 2 eyes near the top. Cut a small orange triangle and glue it below them as a beak. 4. Cut 2 light brown wings and glue one on each side. Your child draws small V marks on the tummy as feathers. You cut a big capital O from brown paper, 2 white circles, 2 light brown wings, an orange triangle and 2 small orange feet. 2. Your child glues the O on the blue sheet. 3. Glue the white circles side by side near the top, then an eye on each. 4. Glue the beak below the eyes, a wing on each side, and the feet at the bottom. Paper plate bird nest The child paints or dots half a paper plate brown as a nest and glues little paper birds or eggs peeking over the rim. **You need:** half of a white paper plate, brown paint, short strips of brown shredded paper, light blue paper ovals, glue How to make it 1. You cut the plate in half. Your child paints one half brown. Let it dry. 2. Lay it with the straight edge at the top and the curve at the bottom. 3. Glue the 3 blue ovals behind the straight edge so the top half of each egg shows. 4. Glue about 10 short brown strips along the straight edge and across the front as twigs. Nothing matches that filter. Clear it and try again. ## Bird crafts with a 3 year old: prints, plates and nests Do the handprint crafts first while the paint is out, then move to glue. One handprint duck and one handprint owl from the same sitting makes two birds for one cleanup. The paper plate bird nest is the calmest craft here: dab brown paint on half a plate, glue paper eggs behind the rim. Count the eggs as they go in. Big round eyes make an owl. Cut two circles from white paper and two smaller black ones. A three year old can stack and glue them. A five year old can cut their own. The letter O owl is the one for letter week: the O is the body, and you say the letter as the eyes go on. Clip it next to any other letter animals you have made.
