The campfire is the part of camping a preschooler remembers, so most of these are flames in red, orange, and yellow. Here are five camping crafts for preschoolers, each with a picture, the supplies, and the steps, from a handprint campfire to a tissue paper jar lantern.

A three-year-old scrunches tissue flames over the craft stick logs and gets glue to the elbow. A five-year-old glues the craft-stick tent and paints the tube bear brown. These crafts come in handy during the summer or the week before a real trip.

### 1. Handprint campfire

The child layers red, orange and yellow handprints as flames above brown paper logs.

Handprint

**You need:** white paper, red, orange and yellow paint, brown paper, glue

How to make it

1. Paint your child's hand red and press it in the middle of the white paper, fingers pointing up.
2. Paint the hand orange and press it overlapping the first, to one side.
3. Paint it yellow and press it in front, between them.
4. You cut 2 brown strips and glue them in an X shape below the palms as logs.

### 2. Craft stick tent

The child glues craft sticks into a triangle tent on paper and decorates the paper or fabric tent flaps.

Cut and glue

**You need:** 3 craft sticks, orange paper, dark brown paper, blue marker, light blue paper, glue

How to make it

1. You cut an orange triangle. Your child decorates it with blue marker dots.
2. Glue it in the middle of the light blue sheet as the tent.
3. Glue the 3 craft sticks along its 3 edges as a frame, overlapping the ends at the corners.
4. Cut a small brown triangle and glue it at the bottom middle as the door.

### 3. Tissue paper campfire

The child glues craft sticks or twigs as logs and scrunches red, orange and yellow tissue or cupcake liners on top as flames.

Tear and glue

**You need:** dark blue construction paper, 3 wooden craft sticks, red, orange and yellow tissue paper, white glue

How to make it

1. Glue the 3 craft sticks near the bottom of the dark paper, crossing in a low pile as logs.
2. Your child tears tissue into pieces of different sizes.
3. Squeeze each piece in a fist, some tight, some loose.
4. Glue them above the sticks in a rough triangle, red at the bottom and yellow at the top.

### 4. Tissue paper jar lantern

The child brushes glue on a clean jar and covers it with overlapping tissue paper pieces; a battery tea light goes inside.

**You need:** 1 clean glass jar with no lid, red, orange and yellow tissue paper, white glue, paintbrush, 1 battery tea light

How to make it

1. Your child tears the tissue paper into pieces.
2. Brush glue over a section of the outside of the jar.
3. Press tissue pieces onto the glue so they overlap, until the glass is covered.
4. Let it dry, then put the tea light inside.

### 5. Toilet paper roll bear

The child paints a cardboard tube brown and glues on round ears, a tummy and a face.

Build it

**You need:** 1 toilet paper roll, brown paint, 2 brown paper circles, 1 light brown paper oval, black marker, glue

How to make it

1. Your child paints the roll brown. Stand it upright to dry.
2. You cut 2 brown circles. Glue them at the top rim, one on each side, as ears.
3. Cut a light brown oval and glue it on the lower front as a tummy.
4. Draw 2 dot eyes, a round nose and a small smile above the tummy.

## Camping crafts with a 3 year old: fire, tent, lantern

Collect twigs on a walk for the campfire logs and do the gluing outside on a tray; it is a summer craft, and the drips can stay on the porch.

A three year old scrunches tissue, presses it onto the jar and glues the flames on. Cutting the tent flaps, gluing craft sticks into a triangle that holds and painting the tube bear are five year old jobs, with you holding the sticks.

The jar lantern is the one to make for the backyard tent night. A battery tea light inside, never a candle, and it sits by the sleeping bag. The tissue paper campfire sits on the floor of the tent.

Red, orange and yellow is the order for the handprint campfire flames, so say the colors as each hand goes on. Count the logs and count the flames.
