Cutting worksheets that start with snips

The first row on the bookmark page is short snip lines: one open-and-close of the scissors each. Then longer straight cuts, then the wavy line. A child who can cut a wavy line is ready for shapes.

Cutting activities for preschoolers, toddlers and older kids

For toddlers and young threes, stay on the snip lines and tear the rest by hand. Most preschoolers can manage the straight and wavy lines. The shapes page, with a circle, a triangle, a rectangle and a heart, is the right challenge for older preschoolers and kindergartners. Same pack, three levels.

Scissor skills: how to teach them

Blunt-tip safety scissors, thumb in the small hole and pointing up, elbow tucked in. The helper hand turns the paper, not the scissors. Sit beside your child, not across, so you see the blades from their angle.

Something to keep

The bookmarks and the fold-out card exist because motivation matters. A cut-out that goes in a book or on the fridge gets asked for again, and that is how scissor skills get practised.
