### 1. Apple stamping

The child dips a halved apple in paint and presses it onto paper to make apple prints.

**You need:** white paper, 1 apple, red, green and yellow paint, brown marker, paper plates for paint

How to make it

1. You cut the apple in half across the middle and pat it dry.
2. Pour a little red paint on a plate. Your child dips the apple half and presses it on the paper.
3. Stamp 2 red, 2 green and 1 yellow print, spaced apart so they do not touch.
4. Let the paint dry, then draw a short brown stem on top of each print.

### 2. Handprint turkey

The child's handprint becomes a turkey: thumb as the head, fingers painted as colourful feathers.

**You need:** brown, red, orange, yellow and green poster paint, white paper, 1 googly eye, orange and red markers, glue

How to make it

1. Paint your child's palm and thumb brown and each of the 4 fingers a different color.
2. Press the hand once in the middle of the paper with the fingers pointing up and the thumb out to the side.
3. Let it dry, then glue the googly eye on the thumb tip and draw a small orange beak and a red wattle.
4. Draw 2 orange legs below the palm, each with 3 toes.

### 3. Paper plate turkey

The child paints a paper plate brown, then glues on paper feathers, eyes and a beak.

**You need:** 1 small white paper plate, brown poster paint, colored paper for feathers, 2 googly eyes, orange and red paper, glue

How to make it

1. Your child paints the plate brown. Let it dry.
2. You cut 5 feathers. Glue them under the top rim so they fan out above the plate.
3. Glue 2 googly eyes in the middle of the plate.
4. Cut an orange triangle beak and a red teardrop wattle. Glue the beak below the eyes and the wattle next to it.

### 4. Coffee filter turkey

The child colours a coffee filter with markers, sprays it so the colours blend, and it becomes the tail behind a paper body.

**You need:** 1 coffee filter, red, orange and yellow washable markers, water in a spray bottle, brown paper, 2 googly eyes, orange and red paper, glue

How to make it

1. Your child colors the filter with marker and you spray it with water so the colors run. Let it dry flat as the tail.
2. Cut a large brown circle and a smaller one. Glue the large circle on the lower middle of the filter as the body.
3. Glue the smaller circle on top of it as the head.
4. Cut an orange triangle beak and a red teardrop wattle. Glue them on the head with the 2 googly eyes.

### 5. Leaf suncatcher

The child sticks torn tissue paper or real leaves onto sticky contact paper inside a leaf-shaped frame for the window.

**You need:** brown construction paper, clear contact paper, tissue paper, clear tape

How to make it

1. You cut a leaf shape with a short stem from brown paper, then cut out the middle to leave a frame about one finger wide.
2. Peel the contact paper backing and lay it sticky side up. Press the frame onto it.
3. Your child tears tissue paper and sticks the pieces inside the frame until it is mostly filled.
4. Trim the extra contact paper around the leaf and tape it in a window.

**You need:** 1 white paper plate, brown paper, green paper, yellow yarn, orange paper, black and pink markers, glue

How to make it

1. You cut a hat from brown paper and a green strip.
2. Glue the strip across the bottom of the hat, then glue the hat over the top edge of the plate.
3. Your child glues pieces of yarn under the hat on each side as straw hair.

The child pushes craft feathers or leaves into a pinecone and adds a head with eyes and beak.

**You need:** 1 pinecone, 5 craft feathers, brown construction paper, black marker, orange marker

How to make it

1. Cut a circle about the size of a large coin from brown paper, with a short neck tab below it.
2. Your child draws 2 dot eyes in black and a small triangle beak in orange.
3. Lay the pinecone on its side. Your child pushes the 5 feathers between the scales at the wide end so they fan up.
4. Push the neck tab between the scales at the pointed end so the head stands up.

The child colours a coffee filter red, green or yellow, wets it, and adds a stem and leaf.

**You need:** 1 round white coffee filter, red washable marker, water spray bottle, brown and green paper, glue stick

How to make it

The child builds a scarecrow from pre-cut circles, triangles, squares and rectangles and names each shape.

**You need:** 1 sheet of light blue paper, yellow, brown, red, blue and orange construction paper, 2 googly eyes, black marker, glue stick

How to make it

1. You cut the shapes from the coloured paper.
2. Your child glues the yellow circle near the top of the blue sheet as the head, then the brown triangle on top as a hat with a thin strip as a brim.
3. Glue the red rectangle under the head as a shirt and the 2 blue rectangles as legs.
4. Glue small yellow rectangles at a sleeve and a trouser end as straw.
5. Glue on the 2 eyes and the orange nose, then draw a stitched smile.

### 13. Coffee filter fall leaves

The child drips or sprays autumn colours onto coffee filters, which are then cut into leaf shapes for a garland or window.

**You need:** white coffee filters, red, orange and yellow liquid watercolour, dropper, brown twine, clear tape

How to make it

1. Your child drips watercolour onto each filter so the colours spread and blend. Leave them to dry.
2. You cut each filter into a leaf shape with a short stem.
3. Tape the leaves by their stems along the twine, spaced apart.
4. Hang it in a window.

How to make it

### 15. Fall nature collage

The child collects leaves, seeds and twigs on a walk and sticks them onto cardboard or contact paper.

**You need:** 1 rectangle of brown cardboard, maple leaves, short twigs, acorns, white glue

How to make it

1. Your child glues maple leaves flat on the cardboard, spread out and partly overlapping.
2. Glue twigs between the leaves at different angles.
3. Glue acorns in the gaps.
4. Let it dry flat, with a book on top if the leaves curl.

An orange handprint or fist print becomes a pumpkin with a stem and vine added.

**You need:** 1 sheet of white paper, orange paint, green marker

How to make it

1. Paint your child's hand orange. Press it in the middle of the sheet with the fingers together pointing down and the palm at the top.
2. Let it dry.
3. Draw a short thick green stem coming up out of the palm.
4. Add a curly vine off the stem.

The child glues leaves, twigs and acorns onto paper to build little people or animals, then draws faces.

**You need:** 2 big leaves, 8 short thin twigs, black marker, white glue, white paper

How to make it

1. Glue the 2 leaves side by side on the paper with the stems pointing down. Each leaf is a body.
2. Glue 2 short twigs under each leaf as legs.
3. Glue 1 twig on each side of each leaf as arms.
4. Draw 2 dot eyes and a smile on the upper part of each leaf with the marker.

How to make it

How to make it

2. You snip short cuts all the way around the rim to make a fringe of petals.

### 20. Pinecone bird feeder

The child spreads nut or seed butter on a pinecone, rolls it in birdseed and hangs it outside.

**You need:** 1 large pinecone, sunflower seed butter, mixed birdseed, 1 piece of twine

How to make it

1. You tie the twine around the top of the pinecone and knot it into a hanging loop.
2. Your child spreads seed butter over the scales of the pinecone.
3. Pour the birdseed on a plate. Your child rolls the pinecone in it until seeds stick all over.
4. Hang it outside from a branch.

The child sticks orange and yellow tissue squares onto contact paper inside a pumpkin frame.

**You need:** orange paper, green paper, clear contact paper, orange and yellow tissue paper

How to make it

1. You cut an orange pumpkin frame with the middle cut out.
2. Stick it on a sheet of clear contact paper, sticky side up.
3. Your child presses tissue squares onto the sticky middle until it is mostly covered.
4. Cut a green stem and stick it on the top of the frame.

### 22. Toilet paper roll scarecrow

The child wraps a tube in paper, draws a face and adds a hat and straw hair.

**You need:** 1 toilet paper roll, tan paper, yellow yarn, brown paper, orange paper, black marker, glue

How to make it

1. Your child wraps the roll in tan paper and glues it down.
2. Glue pieces of yarn at the top edge on each side so they hang down as hair.
3. You make a cone hat from brown paper. Your child glues it on top.
4. Cut an orange triangle and glue it on the front as a nose.
5. Draw 2 dot eyes and a stitched smile with the black marker.

Nothing matches that filter. Clear it and try again.

## Fall crafts for toddlers: the 3 a young three can do

No exact cutting, no small pieces, and the glue stick does the rest. For the others, you cut and they glue.

## Fall crafts with a 3 year old: apples, leaves and pumpkins

Start with apple stamping. One apple cut in half, red and green paint on a plate, and a three year old can go for twenty minutes with no help. Dry the apple on a paper towel between colors.

Take the craft outside when you can. Collect leaves, acorns and twigs on one walk, press the leaves under a book overnight, and the nature collage and leaf people are ready the next day.

A three year old can paint a mini pumpkin, tear paper for the plate apple and stick leaves onto contact paper. The shape scarecrow and the coffee filter leaves need an adult for cutting, and the handprint turkey needs an adult on the paint.

Suncatchers go in the window, the turkeys wait for the Thanksgiving table, and the pinecone bird feeder goes on a branch. September is apples, October is pumpkins and scarecrows, November is turkeys.
