Scales are a pattern to repeat, and a child who overlaps tissue squares on a plate has made a paper plate rainbow fish. Here are six fish crafts for preschoolers, each with a picture, the supplies, and the steps.

Fish fit an ocean week or the week a goldfish arrives. A three-year-old stamps scales with the cut end of a celery bunch and paints with crumpled foil. A five-year-old overlaps tissue scales and saves the shiny one for last.

### 1. Paper plate rainbow fish

The child cuts a wedge mouth from a paper plate, reuses it as the tail and glues on overlapping tissue paper scales plus one foil scale.

Collage

**You need:** 1 white paper plate, tissue paper squares in a few colours, 1 square of foil, 1 self-adhesive googly eye, glue

How to make it

1. You cut one pie slice wedge from the side of the plate as an open mouth. Keep the wedge.
2. Glue the wedge on the opposite side by its point as the tail.
3. Your child glues tissue squares over the plate and tail, overlapping like scales.
4. Glue the foil square in the middle as a shiny scale and stick the googly eye above the mouth.

### 2. Coffee filter rainbow fish

The child tie-dyes a coffee filter with markers and water, then adds a tail, an eye and punched foil scales.

Process art

**You need:** 1 round white coffee filter, washable markers, spray bottle of water, blue paper, foil, 1 googly eye, 1 sheet of light blue paper, glue

How to make it

1. Your child scribbles the filter with markers and sprays it with water. Let it dry.
2. Glue the filter flat in the middle of the light blue sheet as the body.
3. You cut a blue triangle and glue it at one side, point touching the filter, as the tail.
4. Glue the googly eye at the other end and small foil dots across the body as scales.

### 3. Handprint fish

The child makes sideways handprints in bright colours and adds eyes, bubbles and seaweed to make fish.

Handprint

**You need:** 1 sheet of blue paper, 2 colours of paint, 2 googly eyes, black marker, green paper, glue

How to make it

1. Paint your child's hand and press it sideways in the upper half of the blue paper.
2. Wash, then repeat in the other colour in the lower half.
3. Let the prints dry, then glue 1 googly eye on the palm end of each fish and draw a small smile.
4. You cut 2 wavy green strips. Glue them standing up from the bottom edge as seaweed.
5. Draw small circles above each fish as bubbles.

### 4. One fish two fish plate

The child decorates a paper plate fishbowl and adds red and blue fish made from cupcake liners or sponge prints.

Paint and glue

**You need:** 1 white paper plate, light blue paint, 1 red cupcake liner, 1 blue cupcake liner, red and blue paper, 2 googly eyes, glue

How to make it

1. Your child paints the whole plate light blue as water. Let it dry.
2. Press the cupcake liners flat. Glue them on the plate, well apart.
3. You cut a triangle in the matching colour and glue it on one side of each liner as a tail.
4. Glue 1 googly eye at the other end of each liner.

### 5. Celery stamped rainbow fish

The child stamps the cut end of a celery bunch in different colours to print curved scales on a fish shape.

Stamping

**You need:** 1 celery bunch base, paint of choice, white paper, light blue paper, 1 small square of foil, 1 googly eye, glue stick

How to make it

1. You cut a large fish from white paper. Your child glues it on the light blue sheet.
2. Your child dips the cut end of the celery in paint and stamps over the fish so the arcs overlap like scales. Let it dry.
3. Glue the foil square among the scales as the shiny scale.
4. Glue the googly eye near the head.

### 6. Foil painted paper plate fish

The child paints a paper plate with a crumpled ball of foil, then glues on a tail, fins and an eye.

Paint and glue

**You need:** 1 paper plate, blue, green and yellow paint, aluminium foil, orange paper, 1 googly eye, glue

How to make it

1. You cut a triangle out of one side of the plate as the mouth. Glue that triangle on the opposite side as the tail.
2. Crumple a ball of foil. Your child dips it in paint and dabs it all over the plate. Let it dry.
3. Cut 2 orange fins and glue them on the top and bottom.
4. Stick the googly eye near the mouth.

## Fish crafts with a 3 or 4 year old: scales, stamps and foil

Stamping is the low-mess route. A celery end or a ball of foil in a tray of paint, a fish shape on paper, and the child prints scales. Wipes beside the tray.

A three can stamp with celery, paint with foil and press tissue squares. Cutting the wedge mouth from the plate and the handprint fish need an adult.

Overlap the scales from the tail toward the head, each row covering the row before. Show the first row, then let the child carry on.

Fish go on a blue wall or window as an aquarium, and several children's fish make one sea. The coffee filter fish works in a window where the light comes through.

## What you need for fish crafts

Most of these use the same handful of supplies: glue, googly eye, white paper plate, square of foil, blue paper, light blue paper, tissue paper squares in a few colour, self-adhesive googly eye. Everything else is named on the craft it belongs to.
