A foot is a wriggly thing to paint, so these are short, and the bath comes right after. Heel at the top, it is a ghost; heel at the bottom, it is a rocket. Here are seven footprint crafts, each with a picture, the supplies, and the steps.

Families make these for Father's Day, Christmas, and Valentine's Day, and then frame them. A three-year-old sits on your lap while you paint the foot. A five-year-old adds the ghost face alone, then asks to do the other foot.

## Start here: three footprint crafts that always work

### 1. Footprint ghost

The child's white footprint on black paper, heel at the top, becomes a ghost with drawn eyes and mouth.

**You need:** 1 sheet of black construction paper, white poster paint, paintbrush, black marker

How to make it

1. Brush white paint thickly over the bottom of your child's bare foot.
2. Press the foot in the middle of the black paper with the heel at the top. Lift it straight up.
3. Let the print dry.
4. Draw 2 dot eyes and a small oval mouth on the heel with the black marker.

### 2. Footprint ladybug and bee

The child makes one red and one yellow footprint, then adds spots, stripes, wings and faces.

**You need:** white paper, red and yellow paint, black marker, 4 small googly eyes, glue

How to make it

1. Paint your child's foot red and press it on the left half.
2. Paint the other foot yellow and press it on the right half.
3. When dry, draw or let your child press a colored finger for about 5 spots on the red print and draw 3 stripes across the yellow one.
4. Glue 2 eyes on the heel end of each print, and draw 2 rounded wings on the sides of the yellow one.

### 3. Hand and footprint lobster

The child makes a red footprint for the body and two red handprints for the claws, then adds eyes.

**You need:** red poster paint, white paper, 2 small googly eyes, paintbrush

How to make it

1. Brush red paint on the bottom of your child's foot. Press it in the middle of the paper with the toes at the top. Let it dry.
2. Paint your child's hand and press it as a claw at the lower left, with the palm touching the footprint heel and the fingers pointing out.
3. Print the other hand as the claw on the lower right.
4. Let it dry, then stick the 2 googly eyes on the heel, between the claws.

### 4. Footprint carrot

The child makes an orange footprint and adds green handprint, fingerprint or torn paper leaves at the heel.

**You need:** white paper, orange paint, green construction paper, glue

How to make it

1. Paint your child's foot orange.
2. Press it in the middle of the white paper with the heel at the top and the toes pointing down.
3. Your child tears green strips.
4. Glue them at the top of the heel, fanning upward as the carrot leaves.

[![Footprint heart, an easy footprint craft for preschoolers ages 3 to 5](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/crafts/C124-2.webp?width=900&height=675&name=C124-2.webp)](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hubfs/crafts/C124-2.webp)

### 5. Footprint heart

The child makes two footprints angled together to form a heart on paper, canvas or salt dough.

**You need:** 1 sheet of white cardstock, red poster paint, paintbrush

How to make it

1. Brush red paint on the bottom of your child's foot and press it on the cardstock.
2. Paint the other foot and press it so the two heels touch at the bottom and the toes angle outward at the top. Together they make a heart.
3. Let the print dry.

### 6. Footprint reindeer

The child's brown footprint becomes a reindeer face with drawn antlers, eyes and a red nose.

**You need:** 1 sheet of white cardstock, brown paint, brown marker, 2 googly eyes, 1 red pom pom, glue

How to make it

1. Paint your child's foot brown. Press it in the middle of the cardstock, toes at the top. Let it dry.
2. Glue the 2 eyes on the wide part below the toes.
3. Glue the red pom pom on the heel as the nose.
4. Draw 2 branching antlers in brown marker going up from the toes, one on each side.

### 7. Footprint rocket

The child makes a footprint pointing up and adds a window, fins and red and yellow flames at the heel.

**You need:** 1 sheet of black paper, white paint, yellow paper, red paper, gold star stickers, glue

How to make it

1. Paint your child's foot white. Press it in the middle of the black sheet, toes at the top. Let it dry.
2. You cut a small yellow circle and 2 red triangles. Glue the circle in the middle as a window and the triangles beside the heel as fins.
3. Cut red and yellow strips and glue them below the heel as flames.
4. Stick gold stars around the rocket.

Nothing matches that filter. Clear it and try again.

## Painting a foot without paint on the floor

Sit the child on a chair with a towel under it and the paper on the floor or a tray. Brush paint on the sole, hold the ankle, press the foot straight down and lift straight up. A tub of warm water and a towel wait next to the chair.

Make two prints at once while the paint is on, because the first one is often smudged. The heart needs two feet angled together, so do one, wash, then the other.

A three year old cannot do the print alone and that is fine; the drawing after is theirs. A five year old can draw the reindeer antlers and the rocket window and fins without help.

Canvas or thick card holds up better than printer paper for a keepsake. Write the name and date on the back. The heart and the reindeer are the ones that get framed or mailed to a grandparent.

## What you need for footprint crafts

Most of these use the same handful of supplies: glue, paintbrush, white paper, googly eye, black marker, red poster paint, white cardstock, black construction paper. Everything else is named on the craft it belongs to.
