Families make these before the first candle, and the garland goes up as soon as it is dry. A three-year-old dots the cotton-swab menorah, one dot at a time, then a lot at once. Cotton swab dot menorah The child dots blue paint with cotton swabs along a menorah outline and adds yellow dotted flames on top of each candle. **You need:** white paper, pencil, cotton swabs, blue poster paint, yellow poster paint How to make it 1. You draw a menorah in light pencil: a flat base, a centre stem and a bar holding 9 upright candles, the middle one taller. 2. Your child dips a cotton swab in blue paint and fills the base, stem, bar and candles with rows of dots. 3. Dot a bigger yellow dot on top of each candle as a flame. Paper plate menorah The child paints half a paper plate, glues nine paper candles along the straight edge and adds a flame to each. **You need:** half of a white paper plate, dark blue poster paint, light blue paper, yellow paper, glue How to make it 1. You cut the plate in half. Your child paints one half dark blue. Let it dry. 2. Place it with the straight edge at the top. 3. Cut 9 light blue strips. Glue them in a row along the straight edge, standing up as candles, with the middle one a little taller. 4. Cut 9 small yellow flames and glue one at the top of each candle. You cut dreidel shapes from the cardstock. 2. Your child paints each with watery colours, letting them run together. Let them dry. 3. Punch a hole in each handle. 4. Thread them onto the string, spaced out. Craft stick Star of David The child paints six craft sticks blue and they are glued into a star, then decorated with glitter. **You need:** 6 craft sticks, blue paint, silver glitter glue, 1 short piece of white string, craft glue How to make it 1. Your child paints the 6 craft sticks blue. Let them dry. 2. Glue 2 sticks together at one end, like a roof. Lay the third stick across the open ends, over one stick and under the other, and glue both corners. That is the first triangle. 3. Build the second triangle upside down through the first one: each new stick goes over one side of the first triangle and under the other side, so the two triangles lock together. 4. Pinch every corner for 10 seconds while the glue grabs, then let it dry flat. 5. Your child squeezes lines of glitter glue along the sticks. Glue a loop of string to one point for hanging. You cut a six-pointed star frame, about as wide as a hand, from the cardstock. 2. Stick the frame on a sheet of contact paper, sticky side up. 3. Your child presses tissue squares onto the sticky area inside the star, overlapping, until it is covered. 4. Seal it with the second sheet of contact paper and lay it flat. One cup of blue paint, cotton swabs and white paper covers the dot menorah, and the same cup does the craft sticks for the star. A three year old can dot, paint with watercolors and stick tissue onto the contact paper star. Gluing six craft sticks into a star and stringing the dreidel garland need an adult. The menorah is the counting craft. Count the nine candles as they are glued on, then add one flame each night over the eight nights. Hang the garland across the window and the suncatcher star in it.
