Here are four hibernation crafts for preschoolers, each with a picture, the supplies, and the steps. These fit a winter animals week and the week of Groundhog Day. A three-year-old colors the hibernating animal puppets and tucks them into the box den, then wakes them up again. Toilet roll groundhog The child draws a face on a pinched brown tube, adds paper ears and wraps fringed green paper round the bottom as grass. Build it **You need:** 1 toilet paper roll, brown paint, brown paper, 2 googly eyes, green paper, black marker, glue How to make it 1. Your child paints the roll brown. Let it dry. 2. Pinch the top of the roll inward from two sides so two rounded flaps meet as a head. 3. You cut 2 brown half circles. Glue them on top as ears and the googly eyes near the top front. 4. Draw a nose, 2 front teeth and whisker dots below the eyes with the marker. 5. Cut a green strip and snip a fringe along one long edge. Glue it around the bottom with the fringe pointing up as grass. Paper cup bat The child paints a cup black, adds paper wings, eyes and fangs, and hangs it upside down. Build it **You need:** 1 paper cup, black paint, black construction paper, 2 googly eyes, 2 small white paper triangles, glue How to make it 1. Turn the cup upside down. Your child paints it black. Let it dry. 2. You cut 2 black wings with scalloped bottom edges. Glue one on each side of the cup. 3. Glue the 2 eyes on the front near the top. 4. Cut 2 small white triangles and glue them under the eyes as fangs, pointing down. Pop-up cup groundhog The child pushes a groundhog on a stick up and down through a hole in a decorated paper cup burrow. Puppet **You need:** 1 paper cup, green paper, brown paper, white paper, 1 craft stick, black marker, glue How to make it 1. You cut a green strip and snip a fringe along one edge. Your child glues it around the cup as grass. 2. Cut a brown oval head with 2 small round ears. Your child draws 2 dot eyes and a nose on it. 3. Cut a small white rectangle and glue it under the nose as teeth. 4. Glue the head to the top of the craft stick. 5. Cut a slit in the bottom of the cup. Push the stick through it so the head pops up above the rim. Hibernating animal puppets The child colours bear, bat, hedgehog and frog puppets and tucks them into a box or bag den. Puppet **You need:** 4 printed animals (bear, bat, hedgehog, frog), crayons, 4 popsicle sticks, clear tape How to make it 1. Your child colours the 4 animals. 2. You cut them out. 3. Tape each animal to the top of its own stick. Clear it and try again. ## Hibernation crafts with a 3 or 4 year old The puppets and the pop-up cup have no paint, so start with those. Save the paper cup bat, which needs black paint and drying time, for a day with more room. A three can color the hibernating animal puppets, tuck them into a shoebox den and push the groundhog up and down. Poking the hole in the cup and pinching the tube are adult jobs. Play the hibernation before the craft is done: puppets go into the den, you say winter, they come out when you say spring. The craft then makes sense. Keep the box den and puppets together in the toy basket. The bat hangs from a string. The pop-up groundhog comes out again on Groundhog Day. ## What you need for hibernation crafts Most of these use the same handful of supplies: glue, brown paper, googly eye, green paper, black marker, paper cup, toilet paper roll, brown paint.
