Families make these around Thanksgiving, or any week a child is learning to name a feeling. A three-year-old gives a pumpkin a sad face and a silly one. A five-year-old says her thankful thing and watches it go on the leaf. Handprint Earth paper plate The child paints a paper plate blue and green as the Earth, and a handprint or traced hands 'hold' it. **You need:** 1 paper plate, blue and green paint, light brown paper, pencil, glue How to make it 1. Your child paints the plate blue with a big brush. 2. While wet, dab and smear green on top in rough patches as land. Let it dry. 3. Trace your child's two hands on the brown paper. You cut them out. 4. Glue one hand behind the lower left edge of the plate and one behind the lower right, fingers up, so the hands hold the Earth. Kindness flower The child glues petals around a centre with their own name and an adult writes one kind thing the child does on each petal. **You need:** yellow paper, coloured paper, green paper, black marker, 1 sheet of light blue paper, glue stick How to make it 1. You cut a yellow circle, 5 oval petals, a green strip and a leaf. 2. Your child glues the green strip upright on the light blue sheet as a stem, and the leaf on its side. 3. Glue the 5 petals in a ring at the top of the stem and the yellow circle over their inner ends. 4. Write your child's name on the yellow centre in capital letters. 5. Talk about kind things your child does, and write one on each petal: helps, shares, hugs. Kindness rocks The child paints smooth stones with bright colours and simple hearts or smiles and leaves them for someone to find. **You need:** 3 smooth rounded stones, acrylic paint in a few colours, black acrylic paint, paintbrush How to make it 1. Wash and dry the stones. 2. Your child paints the first stone one colour. Let it dry, then paint 2 black dots and a curved black line on top as a smiley face. 3. Paint the second stone, let it dry, then paint a heart in the middle. 4. Paint thick stripes on the third stone. Thankful turkey The child tells an adult one thing they are thankful for per feather, then glues the feathers on the turkey. **You need:** colored construction paper, brown paper, white card, 2 googly eyes, black marker, glue stick How to make it 1. Cut 5 long feathers, a large brown circle, a smaller brown circle, an orange triangle and a red teardrop. 2. Ask your child what they are thankful for, once for each feather. Write one short word on each feather in capitals. 3. Glue the 5 feathers in a fan on the upper half of the card. 4. Glue the large circle over the feather ends, then the smaller circle on top as the head. 5. Glue on the 2 eyes, the beak and the wattle. You cut 4 orange pumpkins and 4 small green stems. Your child glues the pumpkins on the white sheet in two rows, each with a stem on top. 2. Cut black triangles, circles and mouth shapes. 3. Your child glues a face on each pumpkin: a mouth turned up for happy, turned down for sad, a round mouth for surprised and a zigzag mouth for silly. Fold the cardstock in half and lay it closed with the front facing up. 2. Your child paints one large red heart in the middle of the front. Let it dry. 3. Your child sticks blue stars around the heart. 4. Inside, write a thank-you in your child's own words. Thankful handprint tree Family handprints in fall colours become the leaves of a tree, each labelled with something to be thankful for. **You need:** brown paper, red, orange and yellow paper, black marker, white paper, glue How to make it 1. You cut a trunk with 3 short branches from brown paper and glue it in the lower middle of the sheet. 2. Trace hands on red, orange and yellow paper and cut them out. 3. Your child glues the hands at the ends of the branches and across the top, with the fingers pointing up and outward. 4. Ask your child what they are thankful for and write one word on each hand in big capital letters. Nothing matches that filter. Clear it and try again. ## Talking about feelings while you craft Set up the talking part first. Before the thankful turkey or the thankful handprint tree, ask one question, one thing you are glad about, and write the answer on the feather or leaf yourself. The child does the gluing. A 3 year old can paint the plate for the handprint Earth, press the hand, paint a kindness rock and pick which pumpkin face goes where. Any writing on petals, feathers or leaves is adult work. Give some of them away. The thank you card for a veteran is made to be handed over, the kindness rocks are left on a path or a neighbour's step for someone to find, and the kindness flower is for a person the child names. The handprint Earth is kindness to the planet: hands holding it, and a talk about picking up litter or turning off the tap. Pumpkin feelings faces work as a game afterward.
