A leaf craft starts outside, with a bag and a child who wants the red ones. The pockets are full too. Here are six leaf crafts for preschoolers, each with a picture, the supplies, and the steps, from a leaf suncatcher to leaf people.

A three-year-old presses real leaves onto contact paper and holds it up to the window. A five-year-old builds leaf people with acorn heads and twig arms, and fills a big letter L with paper leaves. These crafts fill October weekends, and the class talks about trees.

## 6 leaf crafts for preschoolers, with pictures

### 1. Leaf suncatcher

The child sticks torn tissue paper or real leaves onto sticky contact paper inside a leaf-shaped frame for the window.

Collage

**You need:** brown construction paper, clear contact paper, tissue paper, clear tape

How to make it

1. You cut a leaf shape with a short stem from brown paper, then cut out the middle to leave a frame about one finger wide.
2. Peel the contact paper backing and lay it sticky side up. Press the frame onto it.
3. Your child tears tissue paper and sticks the pieces inside the frame until it is mostly filled.
4. Trim the extra contact paper around the leaf and tape it in a window.

### 2. Coffee filter fall leaves

The child drips or sprays autumn colours onto coffee filters, which are then cut into leaf shapes for a garland or window.

Process art

**You need:** white coffee filters, red, orange and yellow liquid watercolour, dropper, brown twine, clear tape

How to make it

1. Your child drips watercolour onto each filter so the colours spread and blend. Leave them to dry.
2. You cut each filter into a leaf shape with a short stem.
3. Tape the leaves by their stems along the twine, spaced apart.
4. Hang it in a window.

### 3. Fall nature collage

The child collects leaves, seeds and twigs on a walk and sticks them onto cardboard or contact paper.

Nature

**You need:** 1 rectangle of brown cardboard, maple leaves, short twigs, acorns, white glue

How to make it

1. Your child glues maple leaves flat on the cardboard, spread out and partly overlapping.
2. Glue twigs between the leaves at different angles.
3. Glue acorns in the gaps.
4. Let it dry flat, with a book on top if the leaves curl.

### 4. Leaf people

The child glues leaves, twigs and acorns onto paper to build little people or animals, then draws faces.

Nature

**You need:** 2 big leaves, 8 short thin twigs, black marker, white glue, white paper

How to make it

1. Glue the 2 leaves side by side on the paper with the stems pointing down. Each leaf is a body.
2. Glue 2 short twigs under each leaf as legs.
3. Glue 1 twig on each side of each leaf as arms.
4. Draw 2 dot eyes and a smile on the upper part of each leaf with the marker.

### 5. Letter L leaves

The child fills a big letter L with small green or autumn-coloured paper leaves.

Cut and glue

**You need:** brown construction paper, small paper leaves, white paper, glue stick

How to make it

1. You cut a large capital L from brown paper. Your child glues it on the white sheet.
2. Your child glues small leaves all over the L.
3. Point the leaves in different directions and let some overlap.

### 6. Leaf tail squirrel

The child glues real fall leaves onto a squirrel outline to make a big bushy tail.

Nature

**You need:** brown paper, small real fall leaves, black marker, white paper, glue

How to make it

1. You cut a side-view squirrel body with a head and 2 small ears from brown paper.
2. Glue it on one side of the white sheet.
3. Your child glues leaves overlapping behind the body, curving upward as a bushy tail.
4. Draw 1 eye dot and 1 nose dot on the head.

Nothing matches that filter. Clear it and try again.

## Leaf crafts with a 3 year old: collect, press, glue

Collect on a dry day and use the leaves the same afternoon, before they curl. Flat leaves glue better than crunchy ones, and a few in a bag with acorns and twigs is enough for the collage and the leaf people.

A three year old can collect, press leaves onto sticky contact paper and sponge color onto coffee filters. Cutting the leaf frame, the filter leaf shapes and the letter L is yours; gluing twig arms on the leaf people is for a five year old.

The suncatcher goes in a window the same day. The coffee filter leaves string into a garland across a doorway for October, and the leaf tail squirrel goes on the fridge.

Say the sound for the letter L leaves: l, l, leaf. Sort the real leaves by color before they are glued, and count the ones on the squirrel's tail.

## What you need for leaf crafts

Most of these use the same handful of supplies: white paper, brown construction paper, clear tape, white glue, black marker, clear contact paper, tissue paper, white coffee filter. Everything else is named on the craft it belongs to.
