### Activity 1: Jellyfish Letter Collage

⏱️ Prep Time: 5 minutes
🎨 Materials: Construction paper (various colors), scissors, glue stick, letter J outline, googly eyes (optional)

This letter J craft is a must-try activity for preschoolers! Since jellyfish start with the letter J, making a jellyfish collage is the perfect way to create a memorable letter craft. Kids love adding colorful tentacles and watching their jellyfish come to life, and this activity naturally reinforces the connection between the letter J and its sound.

![Letter J activities: jellyfish craft using letter J shape with tissue paper and tentacles](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Letter%20J%20preschool%20craft%20Jellyfish%20collage.png?width=680&height=371&name=Letter%20J%20preschool%20craft%20Jellyfish%20collage.png)

How to do it:

1. Print, draw, or cut out and glue a letter J on white cardstock.
2. Cut out a simple jellyfish body shape from a construction paper and add it on top of the letter J.
3. Add tentacles, decorate the big "J" tentacle with tissue paper, and add pom poms on top of the jellyfish.
4. Add googly eyes or draw eyes on the upper part of the J curve with a marker.
5. Optional: Add glitter, sequins, or wavy lines with marker to show the jellyfish floating in water.
6. While they work, emphasize: "Jellyfish starts with the letter J! J says /j/, /j/, jellyfish!"

Variations: Use curled ribbon for 3D wavy tentacles, or try different shades of the same color (light pink to dark pink) for an ombre effect, or add blue tissue paper around the jellyfish for ocean water.

Learning benefit: This activity combines letter recognition, fine motor skills (tearing and gluing), and phonics awareness while creating a beautiful keepsake.

### Activity 2: Dot Marker Letter Hunt

⏱️ Prep Time: 2 minutes
🎨 Materials: Do-a-Dot markers (or bingo daubers), [letter hunt printable](https://kindergarten-prep.com/preschool-printable-activities)

This is one of the quickest and most engaging letter recognition activities you can do! Kids get so excited when they find all the hidden letter J's on the page. The repetitive action of dotting each letter helps reinforce letter recognition while building fine motor control.

![Letter J dot marker letter hunt](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Letter%20J%20dot%20marker%20letter%20hunt%20activity%20preschool.png?width=680&height=894&name=Letter%20J%20dot%20marker%20letter%20hunt%20activity%20preschool.png)

How to do it:

1. Download and print our Letter J Hunt worksheet (or create your own by scattering uppercase and lowercase J's among other letters on a page).
2. Give your child dot markers in their favorite colors.
3. Ask them to find all the letter J's (both uppercase and lowercase) and place a dot on each one.
4. For younger children, point to a letter J and say, "This is the letter J. Can you find more letters that look like this one?"
5. Count how many letter J's they found when finished!

Extension: Use two different colors—one for uppercase J and one for lowercase j. This helps reinforce the difference between the two forms.

Learning benefit: Strengthens letter recognition, visual discrimination, and hand-eye coordination.

### Activity 3: Letter J Search & Match Game

⏱️ Prep Time: 5 minutes
🎨 Materials: Post-it notes, marker, two pieces of cardstock, tape

My kids are absolutely obsessed with this activity! Even though we play it for every letter, it never gets old. The element of hide-and-seek combined with learning makes this one of those activities where they'll ask to play it again and again. It's perfect for burning energy while learning.

![Letter J matching game with post-it notes on cardstock showing uppercase and lowercase j](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/J%20and%20j%20letter%20hunt%20game%20preschool%20activity.png?width=680&height=680&name=J%20and%20j%20letter%20hunt%20game%20preschool%20activity.png)

How to do it:

1. Draw a large uppercase J on one piece of cardstock and a lowercase j on another.
2. Tape both papers to the wall at your child's eye level.
3. Write uppercase J's and lowercase j's on 10-15 Post-it notes (mix them up).
4. Hide the post-its around your living room, playroom, or classroom—stick them on furniture, under pillows, behind toys.
5. Have your child search for the post-its. When they find one, they bring it to you.
6. Ask them: "Is this an uppercase J or a lowercase j?" Then help them stick it on the matching letter on the wall.
7. Once all post-its are found, hide them again and play another round!

Learning benefit: Teaches uppercase and lowercase letter recognition while incorporating movement and problem-solving.

### Activity 4: Playdough Letter Formation

⏱️ Prep Time: 2 minutes
🎨 Materials: Playdough (any color), letter J card or printable

Whenever I pull out the playdough, my kids play with it for at least half an hour. Since playdough is so engaging, it makes for a wonderful learning activity! This simple exercise helps children understand the shape and strokes of the letter J through hands-on manipulation.

![Preschooler forming letter J shape with purple playdough on table](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Letter%20J%20playdough%20craft%20for%20preschoolers.png?width=680&height=371&name=Letter%20J%20playdough%20craft%20for%20preschoolers.png)

How to do it:

1. Roll out the playdough into a long "snake" (about pencil thickness).
2. Show your child a letter J card or a [printable](https://kindergarten-prep.com/preschool-printable-activities) as a model.
3. Guide them in forming the letter J: one line straight down that curves to the left at the bottom, like a hook. Don't forget to add a dot on top for the lowercase j!
4. For younger children, draw a large letter J on paper and have them place the playdough snakes on top of the lines.
5. Let them make the letter J several times, using different colors.
6. Say the letter name and sound each time they complete it: "This is the letter J. It says /j/."

Extension: Once they've mastered uppercase J, try lowercase j. Or challenge them to make the letter J without looking at the model.

Learning benefit: Develops fine motor skills, muscle memory for letter formation, and tactile learning.

### Activity 5: Jeep Sensory Bin

⏱️ Prep Time: 10 minutes
🎨 Materials: Large bin, rice or dried beans, [4 toy jeeps](https://www.amazon.com/Off-Road-Vehicles-Jeep-Like-Die-Cast-Christmas/dp/B0C8PVQRS8) or vehicles.

J is for jeep! Sensory bins are amazing for preschoolers because they engage multiple senses while learning. This themed sensory bin reinforces the letter J sound while providing calming, focused play. You can use this sensory bin all week long as you work on the letter J.

![Preschool sensory bin activity with hands finding colorful jeep toys in rice](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Preschool%20sensory%20bin%20experience%20with%20jeep%20toys.png?width=680&height=894&name=Preschool%20sensory%20bin%20experience%20with%20jeep%20toys.png)

How to do it:

1. Fill a large bin (a plastic storage container works great) with 4-6 cups of rice or dried beans.
2. Hide 4-8 small different jeep toys in rice.
3. Add measuring cups, scoops, and small containers for pouring and transferring.
4. Let your child dig, pour, scoop, and discover the cars.
5. As they play, emphasize: "J is for jeep! Can you say /j/, /j/, jeep?"

Extension: Sort vehicles by type or color, create "roads" in the rice, or practice counting wheels on different vehicles.

Learning benefit: Reinforces beginning letter sounds, provides sensory input, builds fine motor skills, and encourages imaginative play and vehicle recognition.

### Activity 6: Salt Tray Letter Tracing

⏱️ Prep Time: 3 minutes
🎨 Materials: Shallow tray or baking sheet, salt or sand, letter J card

This multi-sensory approach to letter writing helps children feel the letter's shape with their finger. The salt provides tactile feedback that helps reinforce the muscle memory needed for handwriting. Plus, mistakes are easy to fix - shake the tray and start over!

![Child tracing letter J in salt tray for pre-writing practice](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Salt%20tray%20letter%20J%20tracing%20activity%20for%20preschoolers.png?width=680&height=371&name=Salt%20tray%20letter%20J%20tracing%20activity%20for%20preschoolers.png)

How to do it:

1. Pour a thin layer of salt (or colored sand) into a shallow tray or rimmed baking sheet.
2. Show your child how to form the letter J in the salt using their pointer finger.
3. Say the letter formation steps as they trace: "Start at the top and pull straight down. At the bottom, curve to the left like a hook."
4. Let them trace the letter J multiple times.
5. For younger children, you can trace it first, then have them trace over your lines.
6. Shake the tray gently to erase and start fresh.

Extension: Use a paintbrush instead of a finger, write in shaving cream on a table, or trace letters in sand at the beach or sandbox.

Learning benefit: Pre-writing skills, letter formation practice, and sensory learning.

### Activity 7: Beginning Sound Sorting

⏱️ Prep Time: 5 minutes
🎨 Materials: Picture cards or small objects, two baskets or containers, letter J card

This phonics activity helps your child connect the letter J with its sound. It's a simple but powerful exercise that builds phonemic awareness - one of the strongest predictors of reading success. You can use this same setup for every letter!

![Preschooler sorting picture cards by beginning sound for letter J phonics activity](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Beginning%20sounds%20letter%20J%20and%20L%20sorting%20activitiy%20for%20preschoolers.png?width=680&height=371&name=Beginning%20sounds%20letter%20J%20and%20L%20sorting%20activitiy%20for%20preschoolers.png)

How to do it:

1. Gather 5-7 picture cards or small objects that start with J (jar, jelly, juice, jacket) and 5-7 that start with L (leaf, lion, lamp, lock, ladder, lemon).
2. Label two baskets or containers - one with the letter J, one with L.
3. Show your child each picture or object one at a time.
4. Say the word slowly, emphasizing the beginning sound: "J-j-jar. Do you hear /j/ at the beginning? Jar starts with the letter J!"
5. Ask your child to put it in the correct basket.
6. If they're unsure, repeat the sound together and guide them to the right basket.

Extension: Once they master sorting two letters, add a third basket with a different letter.

Learning benefit: Develops phonemic awareness, auditory discrimination, and letter-sound correspondence.

Free readiness check

### Wondering how your child is doing with letters overall?

Our free kindergarten readiness check takes about 5 minutes and looks at letters, sounds, numbers, fine motor and the social skills teachers notice first. You get a clear picture of what is already strong and the one or two things worth a little attention.

[Take the free readiness check](https://kindergarten-prep.com/kindergarten-readiness-assessment?utm_source=kp-blog&utm_medium=card&utm_campaign=letter-j-activities-preschool&utm_content=mid) No account or card needed to see results

### Activity 8: Sticker Letter Fill

⏱️ Prep Time: 5 minutes
🎨 Materials: Stickers (any kind), large letter J outline, glue (optional)

Kids absolutely love peeling and sticking! This simple activity lets them fill the letter J with colorful stickers while building letter recognition. It's perfect for younger preschoolers who might not be ready for tracing or writing but can still learn the letter's shape.

![Child filling letter J outline with colorful stickers for fine motor practice](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Letter%20J%20sticker%20fill%20activity%20for%20preschoolers.png?width=680&height=371&name=Letter%20J%20sticker%20fill%20activity%20for%20preschoolers.png)

How to do it:

1. Print or draw a large bubble letter J on cardstock.
2. Give your child a sheet of stickers—dot stickers, star stickers, or any stickers you have on hand work great.
3. Show them how to peel the stickers and place them inside the lines of the letter J.
4. Encourage them to fill the entire letter, placing stickers close together.
5. As they work, keep saying: "You're decorating the letter J! This is the letter J."
6. Count the stickers when finished: "You used 41 stickers to make your letter J!"

Variations: Use pom-poms with glue dots, beans with glue, or torn tissue paper squares instead of stickers.

Learning benefit: Fine motor development (peeling stickers), letter shape recognition, and hand-eye coordination.

### Activity 9: Letter J Floor Hop

⏱️ Prep Time: 3 minutes
🎨 Materials: Painter's tape (or chalk if outdoors), open floor space

This gross motor activity is perfect for active learners who need to move while they learn! Combining physical movement with letter recognition helps some children learn better. Plus, it's a great way to burn off energy on rainy days.

![Preschooler hopping on letter J made with tape on floor for active learning](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Letter%20J%20floor%20hop%20activity%20for%20preschoolers.png?width=680&height=371&name=Letter%20J%20floor%20hop%20activity%20for%20preschoolers.png)

How to do it:

1. Use painter's tape to create a large letter J on your floor (each line should be about 3-4 feet long).
2. Show your child the letter and say, "This is the letter J!"
3. Have them hop, jump, walk, or tiptoe along the lines of the letter J.
4. Call out directions: "Start at the top and hop straight down! At the bottom, hop around the curve to the left like a hook!"
5. If you have multiple children, make it a game: "Who can walk the letter J without stepping off the tape?"

Extension: Make several letters on the floor. Call out a letter and have them run to that letter and trace it with their feet.

Learning benefit: Gross motor skills, spatial awareness, letter recognition, and kinesthetic learning.

### Activity 10: Letter J Snack Formation

⏱️ Prep Time: 5 minutes
🎨 Materials: Crackers, cheese slices, apple slices, or pretzel sticks

Turn snack time into letter learning! This edible activity combines fine motor practice with letter recognition - and your child gets to eat their creation when they're done. It's a perfect way to end your letter J activities on a delicious note.

![Preschooler forming letter J shape with cheese stick and apple slices for edible learning activity](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Letter%20J%20snack%20formation%20activity%20for%20preschoolers.png?width=680&height=371&name=Letter%20J%20snack%20formation%20activity%20for%20preschoolers.png)

How to do it:

1. Choose snack items that can be arranged into shapes (graham crackers, cheese crackers, cheese slices cut into strips, apple slices, pretzel sticks, or string cheese pulled into strips).
2. Show your child the letter J on a card or write it on paper as a reference.
3. Help them arrange their snack items on a plate to form the letter J: one long piece (pretzel stick or cheese stick) standing straight down, with curved pieces (apple slices, banana slices, or cucumber rounds) at the bottom forming a curve to the left like a hook.
4. Talk about the letter shape as they build: "J goes straight down and then curves to the left at the bottom like a hook or a candy cane."
5. Take a photo of their edible letter before they eat it!
6. While eating, practice the letter sound: "J says /j/ like in jar!"

Extension: Try different food combinations - a breadstick for the straight part with orange segments or kiwi slices forming the curve, or use a celery stick with bell pepper strips curved at the bottom. For younger children, draw the letter J outline on the plate with a dry-erase marker as a guide.

Learning benefit: Letter shape recognition, fine motor skills, following a model/pattern, spatial awareness, and letter-sound connection.

## Tips for Teaching Letter J Successfully

### Start with Uppercase First

Uppercase letters are visually simpler and easier for young children to recognize and write. Introduce uppercase J first, then add lowercase a once they're confident with the capital letter.

### Connect the Letter to Your Child's World

Point out the letter J everywhere—on food packages, street signs, toy boxes, and in books. Say things like, "Look! 'Juice' starts with the letter J!" This real-world connection helps cement letter recognition.

### Do Multiple Activities in One Week

Don't try to do all 10 activities in one day. Spread them across a week, doing 1-2 activities each day. This repetition in different formats helps children truly learn and remember the letter.

### Focus on the Sound, Not Just the Name

Always teach both the letter name ("This is the letter J") and the letter sound ("J says /j/ like in jar"). Phonics skills are crucial for reading success.

### Make It Playful, Not Pressured

If your child isn't interested one day, that's okay! Put the activity away and try again another time. Learning should feel like play, not work.

### Adjust for Your Child's Age

For 3-year-olds, focus on letter recognition and simple crafts. For 4-5 year-olds, add letter writing practice and beginning sound activities. Every child develops at their own pace.

## Letter J Show and Tell Ideas for Preschool

Letter J doesn't get enough credit. It might not be the first letter that comes to mind, but J has some genuinely exciting show and tell options - jump ropes, jewels, jars full of things. Once you start brainstorming, your child will have a hard time picking just one.

### Household Letter J Items Your Child Can Bring Today

Check your toy box, kitchen, or closet - one of these is probably already there:

- **Jar** – a small mason jar, a baby food jar, or any container with a lid. Fill it with something interesting - buttons, beads, coins, cotton balls - and your child can shake it and let the class guess what's inside. "/j/, /j/, jar!"
- **Jewelry** – a necklace, bracelet, or ring from a dress-up set. Costume jewelry is perfect because it's chunky, colorful, and your child won't mind if it gets handled by curious classmates.
- **Jacket** – your child can wear it into school and present it by explaining when they wear it and why they like it. Bonus: impossible to forget at home.
- **Jump rope** – if your child can demonstrate a jump or two, even better. If not, just holding it up and explaining what it does is plenty.
- **Jigsaw puzzle** – bring the box or a few pieces in a bag. Your child can show the picture on the box and explain what the finished puzzle looks like.

### Letter J Animals

J animals are less common in toy sets, but a few favorites are worth hunting for:

- Jaguar (check plastic wild animal sets - often included alongside lions and tigers)
- Jellyfish (ocean creature sets sometimes have one, or bring a picture)
- Jay or blue jay (a bird picture or figurine)
- June bug (plastic bug sets may include one)

### Letter J Foods

J foods are fun because most of them feel like a treat:

- Jelly or jam (a small jar or single-serve packet - your child can talk about their favorite flavor)
- Juice box (easy to carry and your child can drink it at snack time after)
- Jello cup (a sealed pre-made one travels perfectly in a lunchbox)
- Jerky (beef jerky or turkey jerky in a sealed bag)
- Jelly beans (a small handful in a bag - instant popularity)

### Creative Letter J Show and Tell Ideas

These items go beyond the obvious and give your child something really fun to talk about:

- **Jet toy or airplane** – any toy plane can be called a jet. Your child can "fly" it to the front of the class and describe where it's going. "My jet is flying to the jungle!" - two J words in one sentence.
- **Journal or notebook** – a blank notebook or one your child has drawn in. They can flip through their pages and share a favorite drawing or scribble. "Journal" feels grown-up and kids love that.
- **Jewel or gemstone** – a plastic gem from a craft set, a costume ring, or a sparkly rock. Kids are magnetically drawn to anything shiny. Your child can hold it up to the light and describe the colors they see.
- **Jingle bells** – a small bell or a cluster of jingle bells from a holiday decoration. Your child shakes them, the class hears the sound, and everyone smiles. Works any time of year, not just December.
- **Joke** – no physical object needed. Your child memorizes one short joke and delivers it as their show and tell. "Joke" starts with J and preschool jokes always land: "Why did the banana go to the doctor? Because it wasn't peeling well!" The class will roar.
- **Jar of nature items** – the night before, go outside together and collect small items: a leaf, a pebble, a stick, a flower petal. Put them in a clear jar. Your child can show each item and explain where they found it. The jar is the J word, and the contents become the story.

### Letter J Show and Tell Prep Tips

J has its own personality as a letter, and these tips help your child connect with it:

- **Make the /j/ sound physical.** The J sound is made by pressing the tongue to the roof of the mouth and then releasing it with voice - almost like a soft version of "ch." Have your child say "jump, jump, jump" while actually jumping. Connecting the sound to a whole-body movement is one of the fastest ways preschoolers lock in a new letter.
- **Use a "J word jar" the week before.** Put a jar on the kitchen counter. Every time anyone in the family spots or says a J word during the week, drop a small item (a bean, a penny, a pom-pom) into the jar. By show and tell day, your child can see how many J words they collected - and they can bring the jar itself as their item.
- **Let the item be interactive.** J items lend themselves to action: jump ropes are for jumping, jingle bells are for shaking, jars are for opening and guessing. If your child is the type who gets nervous standing still and talking, pick an item that involves doing something. Movement calms nerves and keeps the audience engaged.
- **Telling a joke counts as show and tell.** Some parents worry that bringing "nothing" isn't allowed. But a memorized joke is a legitimate presentation - it's public speaking practice, it starts with J, and it takes real courage for a preschooler to stand up and deliver a punchline. If your child wants to tell a joke instead of bringing an object, encourage it.
