Here are five preschool crafts for the letter O, each with a picture, supplies, and steps. A three-year-old paints the plate for the paper plate octopus and presses bubble wrap into it. Letter O owl The child glues an O to paper and adds big round eyes, a beak, wings and feet to make an owl. **You need:** brown paper, light brown paper, white paper, 2 large googly eyes, orange paper, glue stick, light blue paper How to make it 1. You cut a big capital O from brown paper, 2 white circles, 2 light brown wings, an orange triangle and 2 small orange feet. 2. Your child glues the O on the blue sheet. 3. Glue the white circles side by side near the top, then an eye on each. 4. Glue the beak below the eyes, a wing on each side, and the feet at the bottom. Toilet paper roll octopus The child paints a cardboard tube, the bottom half is snipped into eight strips that curl out as legs, and eyes are glued on. **You need:** 1 toilet paper roll, purple paint, 2 googly eyes, black marker How to make it 1. Your child paints the whole roll purple. Let it dry. 2. You snip the bottom half upward into 8 strips. 3. Your child bends each strip outward and curls the end up so the legs spread out. 4. Stick the 2 eyes onto the top half and draw a smile below. Roll the dough out thick. Your child presses the cutters into it. 2. You poke a hole near the top of each shape with the straw. 3. Let the shapes dry hard on a rack, turning them now and then. This takes a few days. 4. Tie a short loop of ribbon through each hole. Paint the other hand and press it with the palms overlapping in the middle and the fingers spreading out as wings. Let it dry. 3. Glue the 2 eyes side by side on the overlapped palms. 4. Draw a small triangle beak below the eyes with the orange marker. Paper plate octopus The child paints a paper plate, prints texture with bubble wrap and glues eight paper strip legs underneath. **You need:** 1 paper plate, orange and pink paint, bubble wrap, orange paper, 2 large googly eyes, black marker, glue How to make it 1. You cut the plate in half. Your child paints one half orange. Let it dry. 2. Dip bubble wrap in pink paint and press it over the orange to print small dots. Let it dry. 3. Cut 8 orange strips and glue them behind the straight bottom edge, 4 on the left and 4 on the right. 4. Stick on the 2 eyes and draw a smile. Clear it and try again. ## Owls, octopuses and the short o sound The letter O owl is the quickest: cut or draw a big O, and the child glues two round eyes, a triangle beak and two wings onto it. Say o, o, owl as the eyes go on, and count to eight for the octopus legs. The paper plate octopus is paint, then bubble wrap pressed on for texture while the paint is wet, then eight strips glued under the rim the next day. Cutting the strips, and snipping the tube for the toilet paper roll octopus, is adult work. Cinnamon dough is cinnamon and applesauce kneaded until it holds together. Roll it on a tray, let the child push cookie cutters, and poke a straw through for the hole. They take a few days to dry and smell like December. Handprint owls make a card for a grandparent. The octopuses hang from the ceiling on a thread so the legs sway, and the ornaments go on the tree or on a ribbon in the kitchen.
