A five-year-old snips the coffee filter snowflake and gives the letter S snake a pattern of spots. You cut a large capital S from green paper. 2. Your child dots the S with the yellow dot marker. 3. Glue the S on the white sheet. 4. Glue 2 googly eyes on the top end of the S. 5. Cut a thin red tongue with a forked tip and glue it on the tip of the top end. Your child scribbles on the coffee filter with the blue marker. 2. Drip water on it so the ink spreads into soft blotches. Let it dry. 3. You fold the dry filter into a wedge. 4. Snip small triangles from the folded edges. 5. Open it up flat. Your child paints the plate yellow. Let it dry. 2. You cut orange triangles. 3. Rub glue stick on the back of the plate rim and press the triangles on from underneath, with the point sticking out as a ray. 4. Your child draws 2 dot eyes and a curved smile in the middle. No exact cutting, no small pieces, and the glue stick does the rest. For the others, you cut and they glue. ## Doing letter S crafts with a 3 year old Start with the cotton ball sheep or the cotton ball snowman. Both need a glue stick and a bowl of cotton balls, nothing to cut, and a three year old can do the gluing alone while you add the face. The coffee filter snowflake needs folding help and sharp little snips. Fold it together, then hand over child scissors for the notches. A four or five year old can open it up and see the pattern on their own. Draw a big S on the paper first and let your child trace it with a finger before the snake gets its spots. Say snake, sun, sheep and snowman as you work, so the sound comes up again and again without a lesson. Hang the snowflakes in a window and tape the snake above the bed.
