Here are four letter U crafts for preschoolers, each with a picture, supplies, and steps. A three-year-old glues tissue squares over the letter U umbrella. A five-year-old adds the handle and raindrops to the paper plate umbrella and sticks the cup dome on the UFO. Letter U umbrella The child glues a U to paper, builds a tissue paper rainbow umbrella over one tip and adds a cotton cloud and raindrops. **You need:** white paper, brown paper, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple tissue paper, white paper for the umbrella, cotton balls, blue paper, glue How to make it 1. You cut a large capital U from brown paper and a half circle from white paper. Your child glues the U upright on the sheet, then the half circle flat side down over the right tip of the U as the umbrella. 2. Your child glues tissue squares on the half circle in curved rows: red along the outside, then orange, yellow, green, blue and purple inside. 3. Glue cotton balls above the umbrella as a cloud. 4. Cut small raindrops from blue paper and glue them falling around the umbrella. Clear it and try again. ## Doing letter U crafts with a 3 year old The pie plate UFO needs no paint. Set out a foil pie plate, a clear plastic cup and a sheet of stickers, and a three year old can decorate it alone while you tape the dome on. The letter U umbrella uses tissue paper, which sticks best with a glue stick on a dry table. Tear the squares together first, then your child presses them over the tip of the U. Cotton cloud and raindrops come last. Say up, umbrella, under and Uncle Sam while you work. The short u sound is quiet, so point to your mouth and let your child copy it, then move on. The paper plate umbrella and the Uncle Sam plate hang well on a string across a window. The UFO sits on a shelf, and most children want to fly it around the room first.
