Here are six preschool crafts for letter W, each with a picture, supplies and steps, with a watermelon two ways, a whale two ways and a windsock. A three-year-old paints the paper plate watermelon green on the rim and red in the middle, then pushes in the seeds. A five-year-old blows the spout for the blow painting whale through a straw and gets a little dizzy. Letter W watermelon The child colours or collages a W green at the bottom and red above, then adds black seeds. **You need:** red construction paper, green construction paper, black marker, white paper, glue stick How to make it 1. You cut a large capital W from red paper. Your child glues it upright on the white sheet. 2. Your child tears green paper into small pieces. 3. Glue the green pieces along the bottom of the W, covering its two bottom points, as the rind. 4. Your child draws black seeds on the red upper part. You cut the plate in half and use one half. 2. Your child paints the curved rim green as the rind and the flat middle red. Let it dry. 3. Glue black beans on the red part as seeds, pressing each one for a few seconds. Your child paints the roll light blue. Let it dry. 2. Glue the streamers inside the bottom edge in rainbow order. 3. Glue cotton balls in a clump on the side as a cloud. 4. You make 2 holes near the top and tie a loop of twine through them for hanging. Your child paints the plate blue. Let it dry. 2. You cut a dark blue tail with two points and a light blue spout shaped like a small fountain. 3. Turn the plate over. Glue the tail under one edge and the spout under the top edge. 4. Glue the googly eye on the plate at the opposite end from the tail. You cut out the middle of the plate to leave a ring. 2. Your child paints the ring light blue. Let it dry. 3. Cut red mittens and white snowflakes. Your child glues them and the cotton balls around the ring, spaced out and mixed up. 4. Glue the red ribbon bow at the top. Blow painting whale The child drops watery blue paint above a whale's blowhole and blows it upward through a straw to make the spout. **You need:** blue paper, white paper, black crayon, watery light blue paint, 1 straw, glue How to make it 1. You cut a side-view whale from blue paper, with a round body and a two-pointed tail. 2. Glue it in the lower half of the white sheet. Your child draws an eye dot and a curved smile with black crayon. 3. Drop a bit of watery light blue paint right above the top of the whale. 4. Your child blows through the straw so the paint spreads upward in thin branching lines as the spout. Clear it and try again. ## Before you start: paint, straws and a 4 year old Blow painting the whale needs watery paint, a straw and a towel underneath. Show your child how to blow out, not suck in, with a quick test on plain paper first. A four year old gets it on the second try. The paper plate watermelon is the low-prep one. Paint the rim green and the middle red, then press on black beans while the paint is still wet. A three year old can do every step if you hold the plate. The rainbow windsock and the winter wreath are both hanging crafts. Add a loop of yarn before the streamers go on, and hang the windsock outside on a breezy day so your child sees why it has that name.
