Easy ideas for ages 3 to 5 using paper, paint, and glue. [Kindergarten Prep Team](https://kindergarten-prep.com/blog/author/kindergarten-prep-team) Oct 17, 2026 --- X has the thinnest word list in the alphabet, so the letter itself becomes the thing. Here are two letter X crafts for preschoolers, each with a picture, supplies, and steps. A three-year-old presses a white handprint on black paper and lays cotton-swab bones along the fingers for a handprint X-ray. A five-year-old glues the bars of the letter X xylophone from long to short and taps them with a pencil. Say the sound at the end of a word: box, fox, six. ## Start here: three letter X crafts that always work [![Handprint x-ray, an easy letter x craft for preschoolers ages 3 to 5](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/crafts/C295-4.webp?width=900&height=675&name=C295-4.webp)**Handprint x-ray***Paint, press, cotton swabs, a three can do it*](https://kindergarten-prep.com/blog/letter-x-crafts-for-preschoolers#c295)[![Letter X xylophone, an easy letter x craft for preschoolers ages 3 to 5](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/crafts/C296-1.webp?width=900&height=675&name=C296-1.webp)**Letter X xylophone***The classic X craft, one letter and paper bars*](https://kindergarten-prep.com/blog/letter-x-crafts-for-preschoolers#c296) All 2 Easy for 3 year olds No paint ## 2 letter X crafts for preschoolers, with pictures [![Letter X xylophone, an easy letter x craft for preschoolers ages 3 to 5](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hs-fs/hubfs/crafts/C296-1.webp?width=900&height=675&name=C296-1.webp)](https://kindergarten-prep.com/hubfs/crafts/C296-1.webp) ### 1. Letter X xylophone The child glues coloured paper bars from long to short across a letter X to make a xylophone. **You need:** black construction paper, 5 paper strips in different colors, white paper, glue stick How to make it 1. You cut a large capital X from black paper. Your child glues it upright on the white sheet. 2. Cut 5 strips in 5 different lengths. 3. Your child glues the strips across the X as flat bars, one above the other with gaps, longest at the top and shortest at the bottom. Let it dry before the bones go on, or the cotton swabs slide. A three year old can place the swabs if you dab the glue. Cut the xylophone bars yourself, one of each color, and lay them out from long to short. Your child glues them across the X in order, which is a quiet sorting task for a four year old. The letter X sounds like ks, so it is easier to hear at the end of a word. Say box, fox, six and mix while you glue and let your child find the X in each written word. Tape the x-ray on a dark wall or a door where the white hand stands out. The xylophone goes on the fridge, and a five year old will want to tap the bars and hum.
