## The hard letters: Q, U, V, X, Y, Z and I

Few everyday things start with Q, U, V, X, Y, Z or I, so those are the weeks parents search the longest. Each of these letter pages has eight printable pictures your child can color in and bring, with the word in small and capital letters and three sentences to say. For X, most teachers also accept things that end in X, such as a box or a fox.

## What makes a good show and tell item

- **It fits in the backpack.** Small things travel well and are easy to hold up in front of the class.
- **It can get lost without tears.** Leave the one-of-a-kind toy and anything breakable at home.
- **Your child picked it.** Read the ten ideas for the letter together and let them choose. A child talks more easily about something they chose.
- **Your child can say its name.** A short, clear word beats an impressive one. Ball is easier to present than binoculars.
- **It follows the class rules.** Some classrooms do not allow toys or food. Every letter page has a Not a toy filter for that.

## What to say at show and tell

Three short sentences are enough for a three to five year old. Practice once at home with the item in hand.

1. **Name it.** "This is my ball."
2. **Say the letter.** "Ball starts with B."
3. **Tell one thing.** "I can bounce it very high."

**For a child who loves an audience:** hide the item in a bag and give three clues. "It is round. It bounces. It starts with B." The class guesses before the reveal.

## Show and tell for toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten

Toddlers (2 to 3)

One familiar thing to hold up and name is plenty. "This is my bear."

Preschoolers (3 to 5)

Name the item and the letter it starts with. "This is my bear. Bear starts with B."

Kindergarten

Add one fact, or play the three-clue guessing game before the reveal.

## Show and tell questions

### What are good show and tell ideas for preschool?

Good show and tell items are small, familiar and easy to talk about: a favorite stuffed animal, a book, a ball, a family photo or a snack box. When the class has a letter of the week, pick something that starts with that letter.

### What should my child say at show and tell?

Three short sentences are enough: name the item, say the letter it starts with, and tell one thing about it. For example: "This is my ball. Ball starts with B. I can bounce it."

### What can my child bring if nothing at home starts with the letter?

Print or draw a picture, or bring a letter magnet or an alphabet block. The pages for Q, U, V, X, Y, Z and I each have printable pictures to color and bring.

### What are the hardest letters for show and tell?

X, Q, U, Z, Y, V and I, because few everyday things start with them. For X, most teachers accept items that end in X, such as a box or a fox.

### Can my child bring a toy to show and tell?

Many classrooms allow toys and some do not, so check the teacher's note. Each letter page has a Not a toy filter for classrooms with that rule.

### What is letter of the week show and tell?

Each week the class studies one letter, and children bring one thing from home that starts with it. It gives practice with letter sounds and with speaking to a group.
