Looking for show and tell letter A ideas? A is an easy week. Plenty of things that start with A are already in your kitchen, toy bin and bookshelf, from an apple to a toy ambulance. Each idea below is marked by the sound A makes in it, so your preschooler can match what the class is learning. Pick one, practice two sentences, and show and tell (or show and share) is ready.

A usually says **/a/**, as in **a**pple and **a**nt. In acorn and apron it says its own name, and in airplane, art and autumn it makes a different sound again. If the class is learning the short sound, an item marked /a/ fits best.

## What to say at letter A show and tell

Three short sentences are enough for a three to five year old. Practice once at home with the item in hand.

1. **Name it.** "This is my alligator."
2. **Say the letter.** "Alligator starts with A. A, a, alligator."
3. **Tell one thing.** "Alligators have big teeth."

**For a child who loves an audience:** hide the item in a bag and give three clues. "It is green. It lives in the water. It starts with A." The class guesses before the reveal.

## Letter A show and tell for toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten

Toddlers (2 to 3)

One familiar thing to hold up and name is plenty: an apple, a stuffed animal, a toy airplane. "This is my apple."

Preschoolers (3 to 5)

Name the item and say its letter: "Alligator starts with A." Most ideas on this page are written for this age.

Kindergarten

Add the sound and one fact: "A says /a/. A, a, ant. Ants are very strong." Items marked /a/ fit best here.

## Letter A show and tell questions

Apple, alligator, ambulance, astronaut, an alphabet book, animal crackers and an action figure are easy choices that say the usual A sound. Acorn, apron and airplane also start with A, with a different sound.

### What toy starts with the letter A?

An action figure, a toy ambulance, a toy alligator, alphabet blocks, an astronaut figure and a toy airplane. Any stuffed animal works too, because the word animal starts with A.

### What starts with A in your house?

An apple, applesauce, an avocado, animal crackers, an alphabet book, a photo album, ankle socks and an apron. An alarm clock and aluminum foil start with A too, with a softer sound.

### What are easy A words for preschool show and tell?

Apple, ant, animal, alligator, ambulance and astronaut are clear words for a three to five year old. Each one starts with /a/, the sound most classes teach first.

### What sound does the letter A make?

A usually says /a/, as in apple, ant and alligator. It can also say its own name, as in acorn and apron, and it changes in words like airplane, art and autumn.

### Can my child bring an acorn or an airplane for letter A?

Yes, both start with A, and most teachers are happy with either. If the class is practicing the short sound, an apple, an alligator or an ambulance matches it more closely.
