Looking for show and tell letter I ideas? I is a tricky week, because few things that start with I fit in a backpack, and the letter makes two sounds: the short sound in insect and the long sound in ice cream. Each item is marked by sound. Pick one your preschooler likes, or print a picture, practice two sentences, and show and tell (or show and share, as some classrooms call it) is ready.

I usually says **/i/** in preschool, the short sound in **i**gloo and **i**nsect. In ice cream, island and ivy it says its own name, "eye". Both start with I, but an item with the short sound matches what most classes teach first.

## What to say at letter I show and tell

Three short sentences are enough for a three to five year old. Practice once at home with the item in hand.

1. **Name it.** "This is an insect."
2. **Say the letter.** "Insect starts with I. I, insect."
3. **Tell one thing.** "It has six legs."

**For a child who loves an audience:** hide the item in a bag and give three clues. "It is small. It has six legs. It starts with I." The class guesses before the reveal.

## Letter I show and tell for toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten

Toddlers (2 to 3)

One familiar thing to hold up and name is plenty: a toy bug, a shaker, a toy ice cream cone. "This is my insect."

Preschoolers (3 to 5)

Name the item and say the letter: "Insect starts with I." Most ideas on this page are written for this age.

Kindergarten

Add the sound and one fact: "I says /i/. I, igloo. An igloo is made of snow." Short I items fit best here.
