A rocket is a tube with a cone on top, and a child knows that already. Black paper and star stickers do the rest. Here are six space crafts for preschoolers, each with a picture, the supplies, and the steps, from a coffee filter earth to a pie plate UFO.

A three-year-old scribbles blue and green on a filter and sprays it into a planet. A five-year-old builds a cardboard-tube rocket and launches a straw rocket across the kitchen.

### 1. Coffee filter earth

The child scribbles blue and green on a coffee filter and sprays it so it blends into a planet Earth.

**You need:** 1 round white coffee filter, blue washable marker, green washable marker, spray bottle of water, 1 sheet of black paper, glue

How to make it

1. Your child scribbles large patches of blue and smaller patches of green on the filter.
2. Spray it with water so the colors bleed together.
3. Let it dry flat.
4. Glue the dry filter in the middle of the black paper.

### 2. Cardboard tube rocket

The child covers or paints a cardboard tube, adds a paper cone nose and fins, and tissue paper flames.

Build it

**You need:** 1 toilet paper roll, blue paint, red paper, yellow paper, orange and yellow tissue paper, glue

How to make it

1. Your child paints the roll blue. Let it dry.
2. You cut a red cone, 2 red triangles and a yellow circle.
3. Glue the cone on one end as the nose and the 2 triangles at the other end as fins, one on each side.
4. Glue the yellow circle in the middle as a window.
5. Cut tissue strips and glue them inside the bottom end as flames.

### 3. Star sticker constellation

The child sticks star stickers on black paper and joins them with chalk or white crayon lines.

Collage

**You need:** 1 sheet of black construction paper, gold star stickers, white chalk

How to make it

1. Peel the stickers off the sheet for your child, or let them try.
2. Your child sticks stars on the black paper in a loose zigzag.
3. Draw a white chalk line from the first star to the next, then hand the chalk over.
4. Join all the stars in one chain.

### 4. Straw rocket

The child colours a small paper rocket taped to a paper sleeve, slides it over a straw and blows to launch it.

**You need:** 1 small paper rocket with a printed outline, crayons, paper, clear tape, 1 straw

How to make it

1. Your child colours the rocket. You cut it out.
2. Roll a narrow paper sleeve, closed at the top, and tape it to the back of the rocket.
3. Slide the sleeve over the end of the straw.
4. Blow through the straw to launch it.

### 5. Pie plate UFO

The child decorates a foil pie plate or two paper plates with stickers and a clear cup dome to make a flying saucer.

Build it

**You need:** 1 foil pie plate, 1 clear plastic cup, round dot stickers, strong craft glue

How to make it

1. Turn the pie plate upside down as the body of the saucer.
2. Run glue around the rim of the clear cup and press it upside down in the middle of the plate. Hold it for a few seconds.
3. Your child sticks dot stickers around the sloping side of the plate as lights.
4. Let the glue dry before picking it up.

### 6. Footprint rocket

The child makes a footprint pointing up and adds a window, fins and red and yellow flames at the heel.

**You need:** 1 sheet of black paper, white paint, yellow paper, red paper, gold star stickers, glue

How to make it

1. Paint your child's foot white. Press it in the middle of the black sheet, toes at the top. Let it dry.
2. You cut a small yellow circle and 2 red triangles. Glue the circle in the middle as a window and the triangles beside the heel as fins.
3. Cut red and yellow strips and glue them below the heel as flames.
4. Stick gold stars around the rocket.

## Space crafts for 3 year olds

## Space crafts with a 3 year old: rockets and stars

Black paper is the backdrop for most of this list, so one pack covers the constellation, the footprint rocket and the UFO decorating. Star stickers do the work a three year old cannot do with a brush.

A three year old can stick stars, scribble and spray the earth, and decorate the UFO. Rolling the cone nose, cutting fins and taping the straw rocket sleeve are your jobs. A five year old draws the constellation lines.

The straw rocket is the one that gets played with for an hour. Make two so there is a race, and hold the launch in a hallway where it can go far.

Hang the coffee filter earth in a window. The tube rocket stands on a shelf, and the constellation goes on the wall by the bed for the day-and-night talk.

## What you need for space crafts

Most of these use the same handful of supplies: glue, black paper, red paper, yellow paper, gold star sticker, round white coffee filter, blue washable marker, green washable marker. Everything else is named on the craft it belongs to.
