Anything with wheels or a rocket on it gets made twice. Here are six preschool transportation crafts, each with a picture, supplies, and steps, from a milk carton school bus to a paper plate pirate ship and a straw rocket that launches across the kitchen.

The bus belongs to the week before school starts. A three-year-old paints the carton yellow and presses the footprint rocket. A five-year-old cuts the fire truck shapes, tapes the rocket to its sleeve, and blows it off the table, then does it again from the chair.

## Start here: three transportation and rocket ship crafts that always work

### 1. Cardboard tube rocket

The child covers or paints a cardboard tube, adds a paper cone nose and fins, and tissue paper flames.

**You need:** 1 toilet paper roll, blue paint, red paper, yellow paper, orange and yellow tissue paper, glue

How to make it

1. Your child paints the roll blue. Let it dry.
2. You cut a red cone, 2 red triangles and a yellow circle.
3. Glue the cone on one end as the nose and the 2 triangles at the other end as fins, one on each side.
4. Glue the yellow circle in the middle as a window.
5. Cut tissue strips and glue them inside the bottom end as flames.

### 2. Paper plate pirate ship

The child paints half a paper plate brown as the hull and adds a craft stick mast with paper sails and a flag.

**You need:** 1 paper plate, brown paint, 1 wooden craft stick, white paper, black paper, glue

How to make it

1. You cut the plate in half. Your child paints one half brown. Let it dry.
2. Lay it with the straight edge at the top. Glue the craft stick behind the middle of the straight edge so it stands up as the mast.
3. Cut a white rectangle and glue it on the stick as a sail.
4. Cut a small black triangle and glue it at the very top of the stick as a flag.

### 3. School bus craft

The child paints a milk carton, box or row of craft sticks yellow and adds black wheels and paper windows.

**You need:** jumbo craft sticks, yellow paint, 2 black paper circles, white paper squares, 1 sheet of light blue paper, glue

How to make it

1. Your child paints the craft sticks yellow. Let them dry.
2. Lay the blue paper sideways. Glue the sticks one above the other, touching, to make a long yellow rectangle.
3. Glue white squares in a row across the upper part as windows.
4. Glue the 2 black circles at the bottom edge as wheels, one at each end.

### 4. Shape fire truck

The child builds a fire truck from a red rectangle, square cab, circle wheels and a paper ladder.

**You need:** 1 sheet of light blue paper, red paper, white paper, black paper, yellow paper, black marker, glue

How to make it

1. You cut a large red rectangle, a red square, a small white square, 2 black circles and a yellow strip.
2. Your child glues the red rectangle across the middle of the blue sheet as the truck body.
3. Glue the red square at one end as the cab, with the white square as a window.
4. Glue the 2 black circles along the bottom edge as wheels.
5. Glue the yellow strip along the top as a ladder and draw short rungs across it.

**You need:** 1 small paper rocket with a printed outline, crayons, paper, clear tape, 1 straw

How to make it

1. Your child colours the rocket. You cut it out.
2. Roll a narrow paper sleeve, closed at the top, and tape it to the back of the rocket.
3. Slide the sleeve over the end of the straw.
4. Blow through the straw to launch it.

### 6. Footprint rocket

The child makes a footprint pointing up and adds a window, fins and red and yellow flames at the heel.

**You need:** 1 sheet of black paper, white paint, yellow paper, red paper, gold star stickers, glue

How to make it

1. Paint your child's foot white. Press it in the middle of the black sheet, toes at the top. Let it dry.
2. You cut a small yellow circle and 2 red triangles. Glue the circle in the middle as a window and the triangles beside the heel as fins.
3. Cut red and yellow strips and glue them below the heel as flames.
4. Stick gold stars around the rocket.

## Transportation crafts: wheels, rockets and a 3 year old

Collect the boxes first. A milk carton, a paper towel tube and a paper plate cover four of these crafts, so rinse and save them for a week before you start.

Paint the carton and tube the day before. Dry cardboard takes glue. Wet cardboard does not.

The straw rocket is the one to end on. Once it is taped to its sleeve, your child blows and it flies, which turns the craft into a game for the rest of the afternoon.

Line the finished vehicles up on a shelf as a garage, or take the school bus to school on the first day.
