Eight turkey crafts for preschoolers, each with a picture, the supplies, and the steps, from the paper plate turkey to the thankful turkey with one feather per thing. A three-year-old colors the coffee filter tail and hands it over for the spray. A five-year-old cuts the feathers alone and dictates one thankful thing per feather, usually the dog first. Handprint turkey The child's handprint becomes a turkey: thumb as the head, fingers painted as colourful feathers. Handprint **You need:** brown, red, orange, yellow and green poster paint, white paper, 1 googly eye, orange and red markers, glue How to make it 1. Paint your child's palm and thumb brown and each of the 4 fingers a different color. 2. Press the hand once in the middle of the paper with the fingers pointing up and the thumb out to the side. 3. Let it dry, then glue the googly eye on the thumb tip and draw a small orange beak and a red wattle. 4. Draw 2 orange legs below the palm, each with 3 toes. Paper plate turkey The child paints a paper plate brown, then glues on paper feathers, eyes and a beak. Paint and glue **You need:** 1 small white paper plate, brown poster paint, colored paper for feathers, 2 googly eyes, orange and red paper, glue How to make it 1. Your child paints the plate brown. Let it dry. 2. You cut 5 feathers. Glue them under the top rim so they fan out above the plate. 3. Glue 2 googly eyes in the middle of the plate. 4. Cut an orange triangle beak and a red teardrop wattle. Glue the beak below the eyes and the wattle next to it. Coffee filter turkey The child colours a coffee filter with markers, sprays it so the colours blend, and it becomes the tail behind a paper body. Process art **You need:** 1 coffee filter, red, orange and yellow washable markers, water in a spray bottle, brown paper, 2 googly eyes, orange and red paper, glue How to make it 1. Your child colors the filter with marker and you spray it with water so the colors run. Let it dry flat as the tail. 2. Cut a large brown circle and a smaller one. Glue the large circle on the lower middle of the filter as the body. 3. Glue the smaller circle on top of it as the head. 4. Cut an orange triangle beak and a red teardrop wattle. Glue them on the head with the 2 googly eyes. Pinecone turkey The child pushes craft feathers or leaves into a pinecone and adds a head with eyes and beak. Nature **You need:** 1 pinecone, 5 craft feathers, brown construction paper, black marker, orange marker How to make it 1. Cut a circle about the size of a large coin from brown paper, with a short neck tab below it. 2. Your child draws 2 dot eyes in black and a small triangle beak in orange. 3. Lay the pinecone on its side. Your child pushes the 5 feathers between the scales at the wide end so they fan up. 4. Push the neck tab between the scales at the pointed end so the head stands up. Toilet paper roll turkey The child paints a tube brown and glues a fan of paper feathers behind it. Build it **You need:** 1 toilet paper roll, brown paint, colored paper, 2 googly eyes, orange and red paper scraps, glue How to make it 1. Your child paints the roll brown. Let it dry. 2. Cut 5 feathers from colored paper. 3. Glue the feathers on the back of the roll so they fan out above and behind it. 4. Glue 2 googly eyes near the top of the front. 5. Thankful turkey The child tells an adult one thing they are thankful for per feather, then glues the feathers on the turkey. Cut and glue **You need:** colored construction paper, brown paper, white card, 2 googly eyes, black marker, glue stick How to make it 1. Cut 5 long feathers, a large brown circle, a smaller brown circle, an orange triangle and a red teardrop. 2. Ask your child what they are thankful for, once for each feather. Write one short word on each feather in capitals. 3. Glue the 5 feathers in a fan on the upper half of the card. 4. Glue the large circle over the feather ends, then the smaller circle on top as the head. 5. Glue on the 2 eyes, the beak and the wattle. Turkey name craft The child puts one letter of their name on each feather and glues them in order. Cut and glue **You need:** coloured paper, brown paper, orange paper, red paper, black marker, glue, white paper How to make it 1. You cut one feather for each letter of the name, a big and a small brown circle, an orange triangle and a red teardrop. 2. Your child glues the feathers in a fan, pointing up and out. 3. Glue the big brown circle over the feather bottoms, then the small circle on top as the head. 4. Glue on the orange beak and red wattle. Draw 2 dot eyes. 5. Write one letter near each feather tip, in name order. Nothing matches that filter. Clear it and try again. ## Turkey crafts the week before Thanksgiving Brown paint for the body, then bright colors for the feathers; everything on this list is those two steps. Paint the plate or tube in the morning and glue feathers after lunch so nothing slides. A three year old colors, paints and glues feathers wherever they land. Cutting feathers, fanning them in order and writing on them is for you or a five year old. Cut a stack of feathers once and use them for three crafts. The thankful turkey is the one to make at the table on the Sunday before. Ask for one thing per feather, write it down, and read them back on Thanksgiving Day. The name craft puts the letters of the child's name in order. The paper plate turkey goes on the front door, the pinecone turkey on the table, and the handprint turkey in the mail to a grandparent before the holiday. ## What you need for turkey crafts Most of these use the same handful of supplies: googly eye, glue, brown paper, black marker, white paper, orange and red paper, brown, red, orange, yellow and green poster paint, orange and red marker.
