What secular means here

## Kindy is secular. Here is what that means in practice.

Kindy has no religious content in any activity or area. It is built on the CDC's developmental milestones and research on how young children learn. Kindness, sharing, honesty and patience are part of the curriculum, because kindergarten asks for them, and in Kindy they are taught as everyday skills, in everyday words.

What your family believes, and how you teach it, stays yours. Many families use Kindy alongside faith taught at home; many use it on its own. Either way, it works the same.

## What to look for in a secular preschool curriculum

Six things families often compare when choosing a preschool program, and how Kindy handles each one.

🔍

### Where the religious content is, if any

Programs differ: some are secular throughout, some include faith content in read-alouds or units. Most families like to know which before they start.

**In Kindy:** None in any activity or area, across the whole two years.

📊

### What the sequence is based on

Some programs are built from developmental milestones and research, some from an author's experience or a philosophy. Both can be good. It helps to know which.

**In Kindy:** Every one of the 218 skills is mapped to the CDC's developmental milestones and sequenced by early childhood specialists.

🧩

### Which areas it covers

Kindergarten asks for feelings, friends, small hands and self-help as much as letters and numbers. Some programs cover all of it; some focus on early academics and leave the rest to you.

**In Kindy:** 7 areas: letters, numbers, talking, thinking, feelings and friends, fine motor, focus.

❤️

### How values are taught

Every preschool program teaches kindness, honesty, patience and taking turns in some way. Families differ in how they want that framed, so it is worth a look.

**In Kindy:** A steady feelings-and-friends strand, taught as everyday skills in everyday words. The reasons behind them are yours to give.

⏱️

### Time per day, and prep

Programs range from about 15 minutes to an hour a day, with or without printing. Think about a normal Tuesday, not your best day.

**In Kindy:** One activity at a time, most about ten minutes, no prep. Do one, or up to five, as your morning allows.

🌱

### Fixed sequence, or built around your child

Most programs follow one order for every child, which is simple and works for many families. A few adjust to where your child is in each area.

**In Kindy:** Placed by what your child can already do, and the plan moves when your child does.

## Secular preschool curricula, side by side

The programs secular homeschool families most often weigh for preschool, with Kindy in the same table. Facts are from each company's own pages, checked September 2026. Each name links to a full comparison.

| Program | Format | Price | Time per day | Sequence | Religious content |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Blossom and Root Early Years](https://kindergarten-prep.com/compare/kindy-vs-blossom-and-root?hsLang=en) | PDF | $22 to $45 one-time per volume | About 30 to 60 min, 4 to 5 days a week | Fixed, by volume | Secular |
| [Meadowlark Learning Preschool](https://kindergarten-prep.com/compare/kindy-vs-meadowlark-learning?hsLang=en) | Print or PDF | $64.99 one-time | 15 to 25 min per lesson | Fixed order, with Simplify and Expand options | Secular |
| [Playing Preschool](https://kindergarten-prep.com/compare/kindy-vs-playing-preschool?hsLang=en) | PDF | $39.90 per year, one-time | 45 to 60 min a day | Fixed, 190 days in order | Secular |
| [The Peaceful Preschool](https://kindergarten-prep.com/compare/kindy-vs-the-peaceful-preschool?hsLang=en) | PDF, optional print | $49 PDF or $99 print | About 15 to 20 min, 4 days a week (third-party review) | Fixed, letter of the week | No religious instruction; optional Bible verse cards |
| **Kindy** | App for the parent; child off screen | $9.99 a month after a free week | About 10 min per activity, one to five a day | Adapts to your child | Secular |

Swipe the table to see time per day, sequence and religious content.

All four are good programs, and for many families a printed plan is the right choice. The main difference with Kindy is not about faith. It is a fixed sequence on paper versus a plan built around your child. [See all 14 comparisons](https://kindergarten-prep.com/compare?hsLang=en).

What "built around your child" means

## A PDF cannot know your child. Kindy starts by finding out.

Before the first activity, a short check of what your child can already do places them on every one of the 218 skills. A 3-year-old who knows every letter starts on sounds. A 4-year-old still working on scissors gets more scissors. From there, Kindy chooses one activity a day for your child, with what to do, what to say, and why it matters, and you tap how it went: Nailed it, Almost, or Not yet.

"Not yet" brings the skill back another day, often through a different activity. Three "Nailed it"s and it is mastered, and it returns now and then for a quick review so it sticks. Nothing is scheduled for a Tuesday. Everything is scheduled for your child.

You steer as much as you like. Ask for a different skill, browse the alternatives for the same skill, or log your own activity, the library book, the co-op morning, and it credits the same skill. Kindy keeps the whole map, and it keeps track.

## A week in Kindy

Five real Kindy activities from five areas. Yours will differ, because every one is picked for your child.

*letters* 10 minSkill: Recognizes the letter A in print

### Letter A hide-and-seek

Take turns finding A on a cereal box, grocery store signs, or a page of a book. Hunt for words where A makes its short sound, like apple, and say them slowly together.

**You need:** a cereal box, a book, or a walk past some signs

*numbers* 5 minSkill: Counts objects one by one to 20

### Count out 20 snack pieces

Have your child count out 20 grapes, crackers or cereal pieces for snack time, touching each piece as they say its number. Best part of the math: they get to eat it.

**You need:** grapes, crackers or cereal

*feelings* all day, in momentsSkill: Names feelings beyond happy and sad

### Feelings word of the day

Pick one feelings word at breakfast, like frustrated, proud, nervous or cozy, and watch for a real moment during the day when it fits. When it happens, name it. One word used for real sticks better than ten from a chart.

**You need:** nothing

*little hands* 5 to 10 minSkill: Uses a pinch grip

### Tweezer transfer

With tweezers or tongs, move pom-poms, cotton balls or dry beans from one bowl to another, or drop one into each cup of an ice cube tray.

**You need:** child-safe tweezers or kitchen tongs, pom-poms or dry beans, two bowls

*talking* 10 minSkill: Describes what they are doing in sentences

### Tell me about your game

While your child plays, ask them to tell you what they are playing or pretending. Keep the chat going with follow-up questions, and gently steer them back when they drift off topic.

**You need:** whatever your child is already playing

Feelings and friends

## Kindness is a skill. So is waiting your turn.

Kindergarten teachers say the skills that matter most at the door are not letters: following a direction, waiting for a turn, managing a big feeling, saying goodbye and settling, being kind to the child next to you. Kindy has a steady strand for exactly these, practiced a little every day, the same way letters are.

In Kindy they are taught in everyday words, in real moments. "That was kind. Did you see her face?" "You waited. That was hard, and you did it." The reasons behind them are yours to give, in your own words, whenever you choose.

Lead curriculum designer · early childhood consultant since 2005

Kindy's curriculum is written and sequenced by early childhood specialists, led by Vida Mercer, working from research on how three, four and five year olds develop. Every skill is mapped to the CDC's developmental milestones and placed in the order children really learn it, so nothing important is skipped and nothing is asked before your child is ready. Each skill comes with several hands-on activities, and the same skill comes back in different ways until it sticks. That is how children this age learn best: one good thing, many times, with you. ## Questions secular homeschool families ask us

Is Kindy secular all the way through?

Yes. There is no religious content in any activity, in any area, at any point in the two years. The curriculum is built on the CDC's developmental milestones and research on how young children learn, and it stays there.

Secular or "neutral"?

Secular. Nothing is left out of Kindy to avoid a topic. At preschool level the curriculum covers letters, numbers, talking, thinking, feelings, small hands and focus, and it covers all of it fully.

Does it teach values?

Yes, as skills: kindness, sharing, honesty, patience, taking turns, saying sorry. In Kindy they are practiced in everyday words, in real moments. The reasons behind them are yours to add.

Can a religious family use Kindy?

Yes. Kindy teaches letters, numbers, feelings and small hands, and leaves faith to you. It never contradicts or competes with what you teach at home. Many families use it alongside faith taught in their own words.

Is there any holiday content?

No religious holidays. One activity uses "what day Christmas falls on" as an example of something you look up on a calendar, the way it might use a birthday. That is the whole of it.

How is Kindy different from Blossom and Root, Meadowlark or Playing Preschool?

They are good secular curricula, and we compare Kindy to each one honestly on its own page. The difference is not secular or not. Each is a fixed sequence on paper that every child follows in the same order. Kindy starts from what your child can already do, tells you what to work on today, and moves forward when your child does. Your own materials count toward the same skills.

Do I need to buy anything?

Mostly no. Activities use what you already have: paper, crayons, blocks, snacks, books, the toys on the floor. Some activities come with an optional printable. There is no box and no shipping.

Can I use it with a secular co-op or my own materials?

Yes. Choose a skill, or take the one Kindy suggests, then use a Kindy activity, one of the alternatives for that skill, or log your own, including a co-op morning or a library book. A logged activity credits the same skill, so everything counts toward the same plan.

How does the free week work?

Start with the short check of what your child can already do, then begin your free week. You get the full curriculum for 7 days. We email you before your card is charged, and you can cancel anytime in the app.
