Green rim, red middle, black seeds. Nothing else looks like a watermelon that fast. Here are three watermelon crafts, each with a picture, supplies, and steps: the paper plate watermelon craft preschool rooms make in the last weeks of summer, a handprint watermelon, and a letter W watermelon.

A three-year-old paints the plate and presses a red hand with green fingertips. A five-year-old glues the beans in a row, counts them, and colors the W. It fits August, when there is one on the counter and the floor is sticky.

Watermelon crafts: green, red and seeds to count

Paint the green rim first and let it dry before the red goes in the middle, or the two run together. Two short sessions beat one long one.

For the handprint watermelon, brush the palm and fingers red and the heel green, then press. The seeds go on with a black marker once dry.

Black beans or punched paper circles work as seeds. Let your child count them out before gluing: five for a three year old, ten or more for a five year old.

The letter W watermelon says 'wuh' as the seeds go on. Hang the plate watermelon as a summer wall piece or on the fridge.
