3 Whale Crafts for Preschoolers (Easy Ideas)

3 whale crafts for preschoolers, each with a picture and simple steps. Easy ideas for ages 3 to 5 using paper, paint, and glue.

A whale is blue paint and a spout, and the spout is the part a child wants. Here are three whale crafts, each with a picture, supplies, and steps: the paper plate whale craft preschool classes make in Ocean Week, a blow painting whale, and an egg carton whale.

A three-year-old paints the plate or the carton cup and glues on the eye. A five-year-old blows watery paint up through a straw for the spout, cuts the tail, and pokes in the pipe cleaner. Ocean Week is when these appear.

Start here: three whale crafts that always work

1. Paper plate whale

The child paints a paper plate blue, glues on a tail, an eye and a paper water spout.

You need: 1 small paper plate, blue paint, dark blue paper, light blue paper, 1 googly eye, glue

How to make it
  1. Your child paints the plate blue. Let it dry.
  2. You cut a dark blue tail with two points and a light blue spout shaped like a small fountain.
  3. Turn the plate over. Glue the tail under one edge and the spout under the top edge.
  4. Glue the googly eye on the plate at the opposite end from the tail.

2. Blow painting whale

The child drops watery blue paint above a whale's blowhole and blows it upward through a straw to make the spout.

You need: blue paper, white paper, black crayon, watery light blue paint, 1 straw, glue

How to make it
  1. You cut a side-view whale from blue paper, with a round body and a two-pointed tail.
  2. Glue it in the lower half of the white sheet. Your child draws an eye dot and a curved smile with black crayon.
  3. Drop a bit of watery light blue paint right above the top of the whale.
  4. Your child blows through the straw so the paint spreads upward in thin branching lines as the spout.

3. Egg carton whale

The child paints an egg carton cup blue, adds eyes and a paper tail, and pokes in a pipe cleaner spout.

You need: 1 egg carton cup, blue paint, 2 googly eyes, 1 light blue pipe cleaner, blue paper, glue

How to make it
  1. You cut one cup from the carton. Your child paints it blue. Let it dry.
  2. Glue 2 googly eyes on the front.
  3. Cut a small blue paper tail with two points and glue it on the back so it sticks up behind.
  4. Make a hole in the top with a pencil. Your child folds the pipe cleaner in half and pushes it in, then curls the two ends outward as the spout.

Whale crafts: blue paint, a straw and the spout

Water the paint down for the blow painting so it moves. One drop above the blowhole, a straw, a short blow. Practice blowing out, not sucking in, on a dry sheet first.

The paper plate whale is paint and three pieces: tail, eye, spout. Cut them in advance for a three year old and it is a ten-minute craft.

An adult pokes the hole in the egg carton cup. Push the pipe cleaner through from inside and curl the top into a spray.

Tape the plate whale to a blue sheet on the wall and add the other ocean crafts around it through the week.
